Road trips have a way of making everyone hungry. You could spend time stopping at stores every few miles, but that takes time and keeps you from getting the most out of your mileage goal for the day. It can also put a big dent in your budget as many stores located along frequently traveled roads have higher prices in anticipation of all those who forgot to pack snacks. Here are some travel-friendly snacks that will keep everyone happy.
TRAIL MIX/DRIED FRUIT
You can go for the traditional type with M&Ms, raisins, and peanuts or opt for a healthier version with dried fruit, coconut, and almonds. In either case, trail mix is filled with nutrition, easy to eat, and will stick with you longer than many other snacks. Dried fruits come in so many varieties that you are bound to find something to appeal to everyone on the trip. Whether you go for a single type or a mix of several kinds mixed, this sweet snack is both healthy and delicious. You can either go with pre-packaged trail mixes or create your unique combination with only the items you like most.
STRING CHEESE
String cheese often comes packaged in individual servings. If you have cheese lovers on board, pack some packages of string cheese or other cheese snacks. You can usually find cubes of different varieties of cheese in your local grocery dairy section.
CHIPS
Possibilities abound here. Pack either individual bags or buy a couple of large bags before your trip and make up individual sandwich bags so everyone can grab their own portion when they want. If you feel like a having a healthier alternative, try apple or banana chips.
FRUITS AND VEGGIES
These make healthy snacks that both adults and kids can enjoy. Consider white grapes or apple slices for fruit as they are easy to eat and are the least likely to leave sticky juice over everything. They also are less likely to stain upholstery. Individually packed portions of peanut butter and possibly raisins can help make the apple slices fun for the younger members of the trip. Individual portions of ranch make carrot and celery sticks winners.
DRINKS
With all those snacks, you will need something to wash it all down. Try bottled water, juice boxes or a special indulgence of a Slurpee from the nearest gas station.
