As with everything, however, there are both positive and negative aspects of the RV travel lifestyle. Here are some important do’s and don’t’s to help you start making the most of your choice.
DO: PLAN AHEAD
It may feel great to head out on the road and see where you end up. You won’t feel so great when you can’t find a place to park for the night or end up hours in a construction zone. Some planning is necessary.
DO: BE FLEXIBLE
Sometimes it may take longer than you expect or you may find someplace you plan on spending time at is closed unexpectedly. Be willing to follow a backup plan without letting small issues become big problems. Keep plenty of quarters for laundry, tolls, and vending machines at rest stops.
DO: PLAN MONEY FOR ESSENTIALS
You will need to do things like stop at a coin laundry, or you may end up needing to repair a tire. Make sure you put aside enough money for these unexpected (or not customarily considered) things.
DON’T: OVERPACK
You won’t need most of the things you think you will. Pack only a week’s worth of clothing per person and enough food to last a week or two at most. There is much less space in a camper than you are used to. You may think it is wise to stock up, but you’ll find yourself cramped unnecessarily.
DON’T: NEGLECT MAINTENANCE CHECKS
Moving around can create jarring and bumps throughout your camper or RV. Check regularly for any leaks. Make sure you check tires and fluids regularly and fix anything as soon as possible before it creates a big problem. Things will go wrong, but there is no need to panic. By remaining calm, you can often find a solution to the majority of issues. You may even find that the “problem” actually made the situation better.
