Road trips make for wonderful family vacations, giving you the chance to show your children more of the world around them and having lots of fun along the way. Unfortunately, long stretches of driving between destinations can be breeding grounds for boredom, leading to cranky, unruly children. Try some of these fun car games to help the time pass by more quickly and enjoyably.
I SPY
This game has long been a road trip favorite because it is easy for anyone to play, even the youngest children. One player chooses an object that can be seen out the car window, saying, “I spy with my little eye, something [brief, one-word description].” The other players can then ask questions to narrow down the chosen object.
SING-ALONG
Most children love to sing, so put on some music that your little ones are familiar with. Don’t be shy about singing along as loudly as you like, even if you are off-key or don’t fully know the words. The goal is to have fun, not necessarily to be the best singer.
LICENSE PLATE BINGO
To play this game, draw a bingo card and fill the spaces with the names of various states. As you drive, have your kids keep watch for license plates from other states. Whoever spots the license plate gets to mark off that box on their bingo card. The first player to mark five squares in a row, column, or diagonal wins the round. Feel free to repeat this game as many times as you like, with different states for each new bingo card.
NAME THAT TUNE
This is an excellent game for traveling with older children who have developed a taste for music that is different from yours. Start with a radio station or playlist that you like. If your child can name the song that is playing, he or she gets to choose what to listen to next. This way, you’ll get to learn about your kids’ favorite music while they get to learn about yours as well.
